FOIA Request to California State University East Bay Regarding Chinese National Students on June 3, 2025.

Central Alameda News, in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to California State University East Bay. The request seeks comprehensive information concerning Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.

The inquiry specifically asks for documents or lists detailing all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments of study. If individual names are protected under privacy laws, we have requested aggregated data showing the total number of such students and their distribution across different departments.

Additionally, we are seeking information on scholarships awarded to these students. This includes details about the amount of each scholarship, the source of funding, and any affiliation with the Chinese Scholarship Council. We aim to understand how these financial aids are distributed among Chinese National students.

Furthermore, our request extends to any policies or procedures that outline how the university safeguards its Intellectual Property and other confidential information from potential breaches by monitoring all students, including those who are Chinese Nationals.

As members of the media dedicated to transparency and accountability in public institutions, we believe access to this information is crucial for informing the public about educational practices involving international students. Our role as journalists underscores our eligibility for a fee waiver in accessing these records.

This request is part of our ongoing efforts with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit organization that supports media companies and advocacy groups in investigating governmental actions through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.
